Final Report Abstract

Rolling processes for conventional aluminium (Al) - lithium (Li) alloys quickly reach their limits due to the relatively poor formability of the material. This can be overcome by using twin roll casting to produce thin sheets. Further thermomechanical treatment, including hot or cold rolling, and heat treatment can be used to adjust the mechanical properties of Al-Li sheets produced by twin roll casting. The entire process chain requires detailed knowledge of the precipitation and dissolution behaviour during heating, soaking and cooling in order to be able to select the process parameters in a targeted manner. This project investigates the process chain of an Al-Cu-Li twin roll cast alloy, which ultimately achieves a hardness of around 180 HV1 by adjusting the heat treatment parameters for homogenization, hot rolling and age hardening. Both the hardness and the microstructure development are analysed along the process chain.
