Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The area between the southern region of the Eurasian plate and Australia comprises the continental core of SE Asia. This project has targeted regional- and volcano-scale imaging, providing (1) new geophysical crustal models of volcanic structures and the lithosphere and (2) improved physical connection between these data-dependent models and the thermo-mechanical processes acting to create volcanism. Highly resolved seismic velocity and/or attenuation models for the Australian and SE Asian lithosphere, Toba, Martimbang and Merapi volcanoes were obtained using open-access, published codes for velocity and attenuation imaging developed or improved during the project. These models offer unprecedented resolution on Earth structures, which is necessary to interpret volcanic and tectonic processes. The most important result is the first thermomechanical Bayesian 3D inversion of ambient noise data for petrophysical parameters, which has revealed the deep, disconnected crustal architecture of Toba caldera. The final project deliverables comprise three peer-reviewed publications, one MSc thesis, and several conference presentations. Four additional peer-reviewed papers are also either submitted or in preparation. The primary result of this project is the acquired capacity of inverting seismic responses for petrophysical parameters and their probabilistic uncertainty. Linking models of the state of a volcano with available geophysical data is a massive step change in our understanding of volcanic processes and our ability to model them.
