This project elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying mechanical flexibility in molecular crystals, a phenomenon with significant potential for advanced technologies. Flexible crystals, including organic compounds and coordination polymers (CPs), were synthesized using weak intermolecular interactions like van der Waals forces, halogen bonding, and π-π stacking. The structural evolution during bending was studied using advanced techniques, including synchrotron-based micro-focus XRD, micro-Raman scattering, FTIR spectroscopy, and nanoindentation, revealing critical mechano-structural relationships. Elastic and elastoplastic bending properties were investigated, and the flexibility of CPs was tunable by modifying their covalent backbones without altering crystal structures. Predictive models for designing flexible crystals were proposed, reducing reliance on empirical methods. Additionally, the synthesized crystals demonstrated waveguiding properties, showcasing their potential in flexible optical devices and photonic technologies. Through the successful execution of this project, the library of flexible molecular crystals has been expanded, and robust methodologies for their synthesis and characterization have been established. These advancements represent a significant step toward the integration of these materials into next-generation technologies, including smart optoelectronics, biomedical devices, pharmaceuticals, and energy-harvesting devices based on piezoelectric flexible crystals.
