Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
By using verbal and visual code systems every early modern printed narrative is multimodal. The aim of the project was the exemplary analysis of multimodal phenomena in two language areas, to be realized a repertory in a first phase, providing for the first time a quantitative and qualitative basis for the systematic synchronic and diachronic analysis and comparison of the multimodality of German and Dutch printed editions of three narratives until 1800 (Griseldis, Reynaert / Reynke / Reineke, and Fortunatus). 319 printed editions in 1069 copies have been inventoried and bibliographically described, naming (when possible) the title, place, year, printer(publisher), format, number of leaves, title page, number and repetition of woodcut illustrations, and copies. In a second phase, for each narrative woodcut series of key prints which had been influential for woodcut series in later editions, were inventoried in detail. Based on these results, the PI coedited a volume on the top ten printed fictional narratives until 1800, including Griseldis, Reynaert and Fortunatus, with an introduction and three articles written by the PI. In four other articles she discussed different multimodal aspects in early printed fictional narratives against a European background. All in all, with the description of about 41% more editions and copies than estimated in the application and the contributions published, the project surpassed the aims of the application. The PI is aiming to write a comprehensive monograph comparing Dutch and German multimodality in early printed fictional narratives in a third year which is going to be applied for.
