Advances in high throughput sequencing have revolutionized modern biology across disciplines and propelled it into the era of big data. As a result, competitive biological research distilling insights from terabytes of digital information requires adequate high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, both in terms of hardware and expertise. While the number of projects and working groups utilizing genomic methods is on the rise, to date there exists no satisfying solution to perform high-throughput analyses at the faculty of biology of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München. The HPC cluster, BioHPC-Genomics, presented here is geared for all challenges of state-of-the-art genomic research. With this in mind, representatives of five divisions (or chairs) apply for storage and computing components of a faculty-wide computational cluster. The creation of a central infrastructure will be sustainable, optimize workflows, reduce costs and foster interaction between groups. This opens up for unprecedented synergies impacting research across the faculty. The HPC cluster will be housed and administered in the Leibniz Rechenzentrum (LRZ) operated by the Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, and remotely used at the faculty of biology at the LMU. The LRZ is the central IT service provider for several Munich universities and scientific institutions. The integration into its existing structural, personnel and spatial infrastructure is of added value, and allows a timely implementation and professional administration of the compute cluster.
