Interaction of Electromagnetic Fields with Rough Surfaces

Subject Area Electronic Semiconductors, Components and Circuits, Integrated Systems, Sensor Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering
Term from 2020 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 450966552

The scope of this research project is to complete the Gradient Model which was developed by the applicant. This field theoretical model describes the impact of rough conductor surfaces on wave propagation at high frequencies. A new description going far beyond the state of the art shall be created, that includes other than normally distributed surface profiles, the impact from possible correlation lengths of the surface as well as impact from tread grooves in directions along and across the polarization of the field.Additionally, the correlation between the field theoretically justified model and the practices of surface metrology like laser confocal microscopy shall be established and measurement parameters derived, respectively.Furthermore, the model shall be utilized to create a new metrological access to surface analysis. This will enable the derivation of the relevant surface properties in the corresponding frequency range from a measured surface impedance.
