We propose a half-year pilot project for a detailed study of the interrelations between mineralizing and deformation processes in the Archaean to Proterozoic Carajás Transcurrent System, Brazil. The recent release by the CVRD mining company of an enormous database of exploration borehole logs plus orientated core material and access to newly created outcrops raises the opportunity to investigate the 3D geometry of the mineral deposits and their structural setting on various spatial scales and in unprecedented accuracy. We intend to develop a stochastic model of the deposits from a subset of the total dataset and test its predictive capacities on another subset. If this approach yields promising results, the full project aiming at a model of the entire available volume will be scheduled for a one year duration. Both the pilot study and, if applicable, the successor project will build on the results of a more classical structural study already under way in partnership with the universities of Belém and Durham.
