Since 2007 the DFG Viewer has been the reference implementation of the data formats and interfaces of the German Research Foundation for the digitisation of cultural assets. As a browser web service, the DFG Viewer serves to display digitised material from decentrally preserved cultural assets. In order to take greater account of musicological requirements, an extension of the METS/MODS profile on which the DFG Viewer is based is necessary. It should make possible a combined or synchronised presentation of a musical work in its different and multiple digital representations, be it various related digitised versions of the notated music (e.g. several part books), digitised versions and related machine-readable full texts or digitised versions and related audio or video files. It is particularly important to integrate the data resulting from musicological research projects. These are research-specific metadata, which aim at a close connection of images and handed-down content, up to and including machine-readable full texts of notated music. In this context, the data format of the Music Encoding Initiative (MEI) has established itself as an international standard in musicological research in recent years. The proposed project aims to combine infrastructural developments with the requirements and results of the scientific community.
