Final Report Abstract

The manuscript Ms Eisenach 1361 of the Wartburg Foundation, which was lost for over 100 years and rediscovered in 2015, is a codex of 108 single-column leaves (216 pages) written on both sides, 115x85 mm in size, produced at the beginning of the XIV century and written in a West Middle High German dialect. It begins with thirteen psalms (2r-24v), all of which are translated into Middle High German. This is followed by an anonymous sermon on the feast of the Assumption (25r-33r). From leaf 34r onwards, a series of 80 pieces of text begins (34r- 108v), some of them very short, others somewhat longer. For 16 of these text pieces, "Meister Eckhart" is given as the author, and for another 8 "Meister Thomas". The remaining 56 pieces have been handed down anonymously. The examination has shown that, contrary to first impressions, the collection is highly coherent in terms of subject matter and content: firstly, almost all of the texts can be seen as a discussion of the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas (even if his name is not mentioned), who had not yet been canonized and was not yet perceived as a generally recognized teacher at the time the manuscript was created. Thematically, the texts deal less with pastoral-practical issues of the Summa than with highly speculative metaphysical-theological topics. Secondly, the content of this debate reflects the views and style of Meister Eckhart (even in the texts that have been handed down anonymously or even attributed to Thomas). Some of these texts are Middle High German translations of Eckhart's Latin works. Only the last four texts are closely linked to a German-language sermon (albeit a very metaphysical-theoretical one). The manuscript can therefore be regarded as the result of a vernacular teaching of speculative theological content and can be placed in the context of lay education.
