Phase contrast x-ray tomography is a novel way of obtaining high-resolution three-dimensional images of tissue samples over large volumes. In principle, the acquired data contains a wealth of information on organization and connectivity of cells, and consequently this should allow conclusions about global properties such as pathological degenerations and tissue functions. Local structures, such as cells or organelles, can be identified by robust pre-processing segmentation steps. We seek to develop mathematical representations of tissue samples with concepts from optimal transport theory, allowing to analyze the distribution and arrangement of local structures, leading to insights about their global properties.
