In a recent joint work, we have generalized photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM) to allow for a quantum state reconstruction scheme for free electrons. In this project we will investigate the mathematical foundations of this new technique and will exploit its potential towards the nanoscale study of electron-matter interactions. Moreover, we will explore new forms of local electron spectroscopy of optical excitations. This entails the development of both new experimental and numerical tools to achieve quantitative improvements of the technique and to access new observables in electron microscopy.
