Morphological modification of zeolite crystals in the presence of inorganic salts and through the synthesis conditions

This proposed project is dedicated to investigating the influence of the presence of inorganic salts as well as reaction conditions during zeolite synthesis on the crystal morphology of the obtained zeolites. Focus of the project is the formation of layer-like crystal morphologies through intergrowth with crystallographic twin structures. Such reduction of the crystal dimension in one direction is a promising strategy to upgrade the catalytic performance of zeolites. Accordingly, the project is subdivided into 3 main parts: First, quantitative correlations between synthesis parameters, formation rate of the intergrowing zeolite structures and the resulting crystal morphologies will be identified for the example of the FAU(X)/EMT intergrowth system. The findings will then be applied for the morphological modification of the zeolite types FAU(Y)/EMT and MFI/MEL in the absence of organic morphology modifiers. In the third part, the effect of the morphological modification, especially of different zeolite crystal thickness, in liquid phase catalysis will be investigated.
