Today there exist over 20 billion devices connected to the internet. In the coming three years, the number will increase by 10 billion more devices. The share of wireless communication is significantly increasing and rises an interesting and economic important challenge for the cellular mobile networks to support terminals with increasing data rates with limited resources in interference-limited environments. Multiple antenna systems, so called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems increase the spectral efficiency, allow spatial multiplexing, and decrease the outage probability by diversity. Furthermore, new technologies such as non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) and caching of data at certain nodes in the network allow to improve the spectral efficiency and throughput further. By the MIMO prototyping system the two lowest layers of the protocol stack, the physical and the medium access control layer can be easily changed and novel algorithms for resource allocation, power control and spatial and spectral precoding can be adapted. Even complex multi-cell scenarios with distributed transmit and receive nodes can be illustrated and evaluated. The MIMO prototyping system allows the Institute of Communications Technology to proceed with the whole development process from algorithm analysis and development for resource allocation and assignment to the implementation and assessment on the prototype system. The MIMO prototyping system will be applied for the following research areas: multi-user beam forming concepts for the downlink, cooperative multipoint techniques for downlink, metrological verification and validation of wireless finger prints and distributions, verification of symmetrizability of arbitrary varying channels. Finally, we expect from the experiences and results of the implementations on the MIMO prototyping system to develop novel theoretical approaches and questions, which then are implemented and tested on the system.
