Power skiving center

Subject Area Production Technology
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 461231492

The wbk Institute of Production Science has been active in the research and development of the gear skiving technology for over 20 years. Research activities focus on identifying and modelling of wear mechanisms, process forces, process machine interactions, design of tool contours and process kinematics as well as their effects on the machining process and the resulting workpiece quality. The past research on gear skiving technology was carried out on a prototype machine that is now 19 years old. In terms of availability, accuracy, stiffness and controllability, this machine does not meet the current requirements for a gear skiving center in research and is therefore unsuited for further use. The deficits particularly impede experimental work on hard finish machining by skiving, which will be highly relevant for internal gears in electric mobility applications in the coming years. All future research of the institute in this field, such as process modeling and optimization of the coolant effect during skiving, gear skiving with small axis cross angles, mechanisms of burr formation and gear whirling will benefit from a specialized machining center that is suited for the high process dynamics.
