Complexes with switchable luminescence: Correlation between spin state, packing and emission properties

The aim of this project is the synthesis and characterization of iron(II) and nickel(II) complexes where the spin state can be changed and with luminescent units in the ligand backbone. The underlying mechanism for a successful coupling of spin state and emission properties will be investigated to realize a reliable access to such molecular functionalized compounds. On the one hand, the ligands will be modified to control aggregation in solution (mononuclear complexes) and in the solid (via bridging ligands for coordination polymers or as aggregated monomers) to investigate the impact of aggregation on the emission properties. In parallel, the electronic properties will be modified (metal centre and its spin state, substituents at the ligand, relative position of HOMO/LUMO/SOMO) to better understand the intramolecular properties of the complexes. The aim is to realize a ligand environment that provides synergetic effects between luminescence and spin state. Furthermore, the intermolecular interactions will be used to obtain a second possibility to control the emission properties.
