Hospital care in Germany is often regarded as oversupplied. In this subproject the demand of hospitals in Germany will be investigated by means of a population projection using microsimulation. The accessibility of hospitals in terms of travel time and the regional incidence of cases by diagnosis will be considered. It will be investigated whether the quality of care can be maintained even when facilities are shut down. The focus is on the stationary care of patients. Since the closing of clinics could cause a deterioration in the care of patients living in remote areas ("the last percent"), it will be examined whether the extent of the deterioration can be mitigated by outpatient care centers or other measures (such as the increased use of air transport). The robustness of the reduced hospital network will be examined using various crisis scenarios.
