Final Report Abstract

The interdisciplinary network initiative examined the development of international Romanticism Studies in the twenty-first century. It identified key research questions and innovative theoretical-methodological approaches to “Romanticism/s” throughout the last twenty years and connected them to the research projects of the individual members of the network. To this end, five meetings were held with renowned Romanticism researchers to clarify how qualitative, cultural studies and quantitative approaches to European Romanticism currently differ from but also mutually impact on each other. The network found out that the core topics and key research that have been dominating studies of Romanticism since the early 20th century are still relevant, but find themselves currently enriched, first, by innovative perspectives from cultural and media studies theory, second, by the methodological possibilities of digital humanities and, third, by critical reflections on the Romantic canon. The results of the network’s engagement with the current dynamics of research in Romanticism were presented during a public panel discussion at the Romantik- Museum in Frankfurt/Main in the spring 2024. In addition to the publication of individual papers on Romanticism and a cooperation project with the Romantik-Museum on the female authors of Romanticism, the network members have compiled a 600-page research volume in which the current research dynamics are systematically differentiated and exemplarily illustrated with the projects of the individual members of the network. The volume is currently undergoing peer review and will be published in spring 2026 in the academic book series Neue Romantikforschung (J.B. Metzler Verlag). The network also compiled a bibliography of international research articles on Romanticism published after 2000 – this resource has been available to the research community and interested members of the public since 2025. The network’s activities were documented on the network’s official website throughout the funding period.
