The main goal of this proposal is to control the band structure of layered transition metal dichalcogenides with light. For that purpose, we will explore selective phononic excitation using tailored femtosecond laser pulses in the terahertz spectral range that we will combine with a time- and angle-resolved photoemission probe to gain access to the transient electronic structure. The experimental work will be closely intertwined with ab initio time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations using the state-of-the-art full-potential Elk code (elk.sourceforge.io).
