C05 investigates how humans and AI systems can jointly explore a decision space to make an explainable and well-founded decision. We focus on diagnostic decision-making in medicine and combine empirical studies on physicians' exploration strategies and cognitive biases, as well as on assessments of explanations and argument strength, with the development of an AI-based assistance system (ASCODI) that supports medical experts during a diagnostic process. In the second phase, we will comprehensively test this approach and extend it to the (co-)construction of arguments through interactive identification, evaluation, and verification of hypotheses and evidence.
