Project Details
Impact of aerosol precursors and aircraft emissions on the composition of the UTLS (A01)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 428312742
During the HALO campaigns AEROCLOUD-FIRE in 2027 and CONTANGO-FIRE in 2028, the project will measure SO2 and HNO3, along with microphysical properties of contrails and cirrus clouds over America and Europe. The project will advance our understanding of contrail formation, evolution and contrail climate effects to assess related mitigation measures. The dependence of aerosol nucleation on the abundance of specific precursor species will be explored in the outflow of convection and the free UTLS. The data will be used to evaluate a contrail model (CoCiP), and climate models (EMAC, ICON), closely collaborating with 8 other projects in TPChange research areas A, B, C, and Z.
