Project Details
Processing of organic compounds in ice particles during deep convective transport into the UTLS (A07)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 428312742
The goal of project A07 is the experimental investigation of the ice/gas phase partitioning (retention) of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors and constituents during growth processes of ice particles. Measurements of retention during freezing of the species, and dry and wet riming will be performed employing the world-wide unique Mainz vertical wind tunnel and a walk-in cold room. For retention measurements during diffusional ice growth a novel diffusional chamber will be developed. We will also conduct numerical modelling studies on retention and derive parametrisations for mass trans-fer coefficients of SOA precursors and constituents based on experimental data. The chemical analysis will be performed using ion chromatography (IC) or high performance liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrome-try (HPLC-HRMS).
