Transport of aerosols and precursors from the planetary boundary layer into the UTLS- BrIdging Surface emissions, Transport and UTLS Matter (BISTUM) (B02)
Subject Area
Atmospheric Science
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 428312742
Project B02 investigates the coupling between surface emissions of atmospheric trace matter (aerosols and aerosol precur-sors) and trace matter in the UTLS. This implies that surface emissions reach the UTLS, which requires effective verti-cal transport. Within B02, the combination of detailed ground-based, drone- (lower boundary layer), and balloon-borne (up to UTLS altitudes) aerosol measurements is planned, and respective infrastructures and methods will be developed and optimised. After development and validation of the respective platforms and operation strategies, they will be applied in settings of frontal convection (strong vertical uplift situations) during an intensive operational phase of joint field and modelling activities with numerous CRC partners.
