Project D02 addresses prominent unsolved issues in relative clause typology where the limits of variability or their source remain to be determined. As a typological investigation informed by syntactic theory, it will study various factors that impose limits on variability such as grammar-internal constraints, economy, language contact, and phylogenetic factors. The main areas of investigation are the limits in the variability of relative clause strategies (focusing on correlatives), correlations between relative clause strategy and word order, and limits of variability in the distribution of relative clause strategies across grammatical functions.
