Mass Spectrometer (high-resolution LC-ESI-IMS-MSMS Spectrometer)

Subject Area Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Analytical Chemistry
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 467392869

Mass spectrometry is a cross-sectional technology that plays a key role in chemical, biochemical and molecular biological research and teaching. Representatives of the Institute of Chemistry and the Institute of Biochemistry and Biology of the University of Potsdam have joined forces and combined the urgently needed replacements and a new acquisition of individual mass spectrometry instruments with the establishment of a cross-institute MS analytics center. Our aim is to strengthen synergy effects and to share and expand analytical expertise at the University of Potsdam. Further, we intend to coordinate the use of various analytical techniques, to enhance the overall capacity and to prevent repair bottlenecks. With main use in the Institute of Chemistry, here, we apply for an LC-ESI-IMS-MSMS instrument for the analysis of dissolved samples, on the one hand to replace the old ESI-MSMS spectrometer, which is prone to repair, and on the other hand to provide ion mobility spectrometry as a new, orthogonal method. The instrument will be used to perform high-resolution ESI measurements on small, polar molecules but also on peptides, proteins and their complexes. As part of the package proposal, the following additional equipment is also requested:1) a GC-EI-MSMS instrument for small, easily vaporizable analytes (replacement proposal / Institute of Chemistry), 2) a MALDI-MSMS instrument into which samples are applied in crystalline matrix (replacement proposal / Institute of Biochemistry and Biology), and 3) an ultra-high resolution LC-ESI-Orbitrap-MSMS instrument for dissolved samples (new acquisition proposal / Institute of Biochemistry and Biology).Numerous groups from both institutes will benefit from higher performance and versatility of the instruments (including IMS and ultra-high resolution) as well as the significantly increased sample capacity and will be able to advance internationally competitive research projects.
