The study focuses on strategies in the educational system for managing COVID-19 pandemic. How do governments, school providers, principals and teachers deal with the pandemic, which strategies do they favour and which ideas guide them? The study is situated in Rwanda and the Kivu region (North and South Kivu provinces) of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the so- called Great Lake Region in Central Africa. This region is particularly interesting as the influence of different structural aspects of educational systems in the handling of the pandemic can be analysed (governance structures and non-state schooling), as well as the influence of the vulnerable envrionment and the previous experiences with Ebola in the North-Kivu region.
