Role of synaptic lipid modulated cortical excitability in motor control (A07#)

Locomotion is the result of movement initiation and motor control, which occur at the supraspinal level mainly in the cortex and in subcortical nuclei. Bioactive synaptic lipids, such as lysophosphatidic acid regulate the excitability of motor-associated cortical and subcortical networks, however, are subject to metabolic influences. Alteration of synaptic lipid signal transduction is associated with increased locomotion and leads to an endophenotype of psychiatric disorders. In this project, using transgenic animals that allow cell type-specific manipulation of synaptic signal transduction, we will investigate the role of synaptic lipids in controlling motor-related networks and will assess their relevance to psychiatric disorders. Here, cell biological, electrophysiological in vitro and in vivo studies will be combined with behavioral studies. The results will be validated in humans, who will be analysed under control conditions and after metabolic stimulation using motor tests and MEG recordings.
