MAX phases are seen as an innovative material with interesting physical and chemical properties, which get into research focus only a few years ago. Based on their special nanolaminate structure, they are combining the usually contradicting properties of ceramics and metals in a single material. Thus, their technological use are functional ceramics is attracting much interest in them. Having a high oxidation resistance up to 1300 C, a good electrical and thermal conductivity and high strength at the same time, they are also ductile, shock resistant and machinable. The production of such MAX phases as films or coatings is only barely investigated, but such coatings have a tremendous technical potential. Thus, it is the main goal of this project to obtain methods and strategies for the reliable productions of MAX phase coatings and films, e.g. by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The produced MAX films are then investigated for their properties and possible industrial applicability. A focus is put in their application as coatings for extreme electricity conditions (highest voltages, highest currents). In addition, their production and properties for electronic applications will be investigated.
