Carbocations with new leaving groups are suggested to lead to improved precursors that allow the unambiguous elucidation of ultrafast bimolecular reactions without diffusion. Photo-sensitizers will allow the study of UV sensitive reactants, while hydride transfer will yield an access to the question of concerted two-center reactions. The unexplained photo-physics and even constitution of melanines is suggested to be unraveled through the ultrafast characterization of increasingly complex oligomers. Hemithioindigo and hemiindigo photo-switches will be used to study the influence of conjugation on the switching behavior and efficiency.
