Applicant Juliane Dräger
Subject Area Nutritional Sciences
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 491394008

With the requested funding, we would like to support and motivate our researchers beyond the current level in making their research results immediately freely accessible worldwide, without legal and technical barriers, and thus publish them in a reusable way. This enables a fast, efficient, transparent, and barrier-free exchange of research-based knowledge. Furthermore, we pursue the goal of publishing research results of high scientific quality, high visibility and high citation rates. With our OA policy (2017) and with the revision of our publication guideline (2022), we have created the formal basis for this. However, the "culture shift" towards OA comes with increased costs. This funding measure supports us to even better implement our goal of open, transparent and accessible publishing and to steadily embed the culture of OA publishing among our researchers through the incentive of the DFG grant. When it comes to publishing research results from externally funded projects, this funding measure will help us in fully financing the OA publications that result from the project. This is because the funding available for OA publications in externally funded projects is not sufficient to fully fund our OA publications and often has to be compensated by reallocation from other cost categories (e.g. from material and personnel funds). Thus, the DFG grant for OA publication costs also helps in supporting our externally funded research. Due to the high turnover that is typical for scientific institutions, we need to find ways to also inform new employees about our OA strategy and available funding opportunities. For this purpose, we plan to introduce a mentoring program, create a digital info brochure and a short explanatory video. On the administrative level, we want to use the continuation of the funding program as an opportunity to consolidate and further optimize our new processes for determining the volume of publications and the resulting publication costs. In summary, the goals of the project can be stated as follows: - Promotion of OA publications as a contribution to efficient and barrier-free knowledge transfer. - Evaluation and optimization of the new processes for the central recording of OA publications and the associated costs - Raising awareness and regular training of our (new) staff with regard to OA publishing (e.g., through info brochure, mentoring, explanatory video) - Updating our Open Access Policy
