Behavioral determinants of inequalities in the labor market (A05*)

Subject Area Economic Policy, Applied Economics
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 326731373

We investigate how inequalities emerge, are reinforced or mitigated in the labor market. We focus on inequalities that arise during job search, at the hiring stage and at the workplace. We study empirically whether and how these inequalities can be traced to behavioral biases, bounded rationality and heterogeneity in skills, personality and preferences. We assess how objective and perceived inequality determine labor market behavior, well-being and health. Our analysis generates insights for the design of policies that aim at fostering equality of opportunity in hiring and admission situations, and that effectively improve labor market outcomes of disadvantaged workers.
