Single crystal diffractometer

Subject Area Molecular Chemistry
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 491780393

The single crystal X-ray structure analysis is one of the most important methods for the elucidation of molecular structures in the Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry. Furthermore, this method is essential for the determination of intermolecular interactions between similar but also different species in organic solids, and thus enables the understanding of the properties of functional materials and other systems. In this context, the here requested device serves as fast routine system for the above mentioned investigations. Although the molecular backbones of organic compounds consist of the weakly diffracting elements C, H, N and O, heavier elements such as Br, I, S, P etc. are also present in crucial places in the molecular structures. In particular, in the field of supramolecular chemistry, interactions with or between heavier elements (e.g. halogen-halogen contacts) are often the focus of scientific interest, and in this area we also carry out our research with proven expertise. Such interactions are also important for projects, which deal with the subject of resource and environmental chemistry. Our work focuses on the selective complexation, enrichment and recovery of metals such as In, Ge and Ga, which belong to strategic and even critical metallic raw materials. The crystal structure analyses of various receptor-substrate complexes give interesting insights into the principles of molecular recognition processes. The new developments of modern pixel detectors and microfocus tubes provide essential improvements and allow also a significantly reduction of the measurement time. The device requested here represents replacement procurement.
