Antimony and bismuth-based coordination polymers with pyridyl-N-donors and the influence of the lone-pair character on their luminescence

This study is supposed to provide a focused investigation of reactions of trivalent halides of antimony and bismuth together with di- and tripodal N-donor ligands with pyridyl functions. The objective of this project is the achievement of a better understanding of the luminescence properties of group 15 bismuth- and antimony-containing coordination polymers. Hereby, especially, the influence of stereochemically active electron lone-pairs of Bi(III)/Sb(III) will be a focus. In addition, substitution with lanthanide ions with respect to a statistic replacement will be investigated and regions of miscibility and the luminescence properties determined. Preparative chemistry and analytical results will be supported by quantum chemical calculations in order to better understand the broadband transitions of these group 15 compounds. The new coordination polymers are also planned to be investigated regarding the questions, if such group 15 compounds are suitable new host lattices for lanthanide-ions in coordination chemistry, and if group 15 coordination polymers may even be an alternative to lanthanide containing phosphors in the future. Especially the influence of the lone pair character is in the focus of this project, as preliminary work presumes strong influences on the luminescence properties. The project is motivated mainly by fundamental scientific and touches questions on potential optical applications.
