Inductively coupled plasma-mass-spectrometer with triple quadrupol (ICP-MS-QQQ)

Subject Area Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 493326512

The requested instrument is a inductively coupled plasma-mass-spectrometer with triple quadrupol (ICP-MS-QQQ) for detection and quantification of chemical major and trace elements in the ultra-trace range and for the deter¬mination of nano-particles in aqueous solution. For the determination of trace elements in seawater the instruments can be coupled to a trace element pre-enrichment and desalting unit (seaFAST). The instrument will replace a similar device with the same function (age 13 years). ICP-MS instruments of the newest generation offer triple-quadrupol for better elimination of interferences even in solution with complex matrices. Combined with a pre-enrichment and desalting unit ICP-MS-Triple-Quad allows the determination of ultra-trace levels of trace elements in seawater including mercury. Additionally, due to the strong and effective compensation of interferences by triple-quad, this newest instrument generation even allows the determination of light elements such as silicon, sulphur and phosphorous at trace levels. The determination of single nano-particles is also possible. The requested instruments is planned to be installed in the environmental geochemistry lab at Institute of Geoecology at TU-Braunschweig, where it will be used in the field of environmental geochemistry research applications. Here, research emphases are the determination of major- and trace elements in aquatic systems and soils on the ultra-trace level. In addition, colloids and agglomerates in DOC-rich samples will be chemically characterized through coupling the ICP-QQQ-MS with size-exclusion and ion separation techniques. As with the previous instrument in the past, we intent continuing offering trace element meaurements inside and outside TU-Braunschweig for research groups in the field of plant science, particle-science and surface-engineering, food chemistry and ecological chemistry.
