Reanalyses have become an important tool in climate monitoring. However, the terrestrial water cycle has not yet been realistically represented. In addition, the human water use and especially irrigation have not yet been accounted for. Therefore, project D03 develops a comprehensive reanalysis framework with a fully-coupled regional Earth system model for the Eurasian domain. By using a strongly-coupled data assimilation approach and an explicit irrigation scheme, we aim for a more complete and consistent representation of the terrestrial water cycle as well as its interaction with vegetation.
