Influence of the Coordination Environment of Fe-Based Materials on the Electrochemical Stability (C06)

The stability of metallic Fe is one of the main drawbacks in aqueous electrochemistry. Preliminary results revealed that transition metals such as Fe can be stabilized through the coordination environment, specifically through the incorporation of heteroatoms such as phosphorous (P), carbon (C), nitrogen (N) or boron (B) into the metal’s crystal structure. The aim of this project is to gain a fundamental understanding of the influence of heteroatom incorporation and to understand the change in redox behavior, reactivity and associated stability against dissolution. Exemplarily, the hydrogen evolution reaction will be studied as a test reaction. The obtained knowledge can potentially be used for a wide range of applications and might not be limited to electrocatalysis.
