The research project encompasses the supply of an IT-infrastructure associated with the prospectivedevelopment of methods to archive and retrieve data observed on the HALO aircraft. In thiscontext the data retrieval and archive system (labeled as HALO-DB), which is basically established, will manage a wide range of data during the expected operating time (30 years) of HALOand moreover. Intended data will cover a large quantity of parameters in various fields of theatmospheric, oceanic and geo sciences. The data sets will be allocated by a couple of standardizedattributes, called metadata. The characterization (specifications in terms of the usedmetadata) of the stored data at HALO-DB is tailored and focused on the data, related to theHALO community. Furthermore, the comprehensive spectrum of metadata will encompass thepossibility to hold data, based on simulations or data observed by other non-HALO platforms(e.g. ships, remote sensing systems). So web-based applications (data classification, quicklooks)can be performed to generate meaningful results related to their varied demands. Inaddition to the substantial task of HALO-DB to process and store numerical data, HALO-DB willalso handle data in form of images etc., provided that the corresponding metadata are indicated.Using HALO-DB, the scientists will be able to compare modeled and observed (on differentplatforms) data, to enlarge the knowledge concerning processes in the Earth’s subsystems. Thelong-term storage and the consistent providing of data will combine the maximized scientificprofit, productivity and synergy effects across the interested scientific communities.
