High-performance computing cluster

Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 499086507

The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) has a strong focus on engineering science. A modern and high-grade HPC infrastructure is essential for many working groups at TUHH. This proposal is submitted to replace the current High-performance computer which was funded as a Major Instrumentation by DFG and put into operation in 2015. Its major area of application is the numerical simulation in engineering science, especially fluid and structural mechanics as well as molecular dynamics and machine learning. The new system has to cover a broad spectrum of applications with different hardware requirements and must be equipped heterogeneous. The local operation plays a decisive role as it allows adaption to specific user needs and therefore enables competitive research at TUHH. Moreover, the system is embedded into a state-wide concept for high-performance computers. This proposal is supported by the computing center as operator of the system as well as six working groups at TUHH which are going to use the device primarily. They are very successful in third-party funding and publishing in renowned journal and have a longtime experience in scientific computing. Moreover, the central supply of HPC capacities will allow more working groups a low-threshold use of high-performance computers.
