The most relevant complication after removal of part of the pancreas is leakage of pancreas juice from the remainder of the pancreas. The PD-HYDRA study aims to investigate whether the administration of hydrocortisone, a steroid hormone effective against inflammatory reactions, reduces the frequency of leakage after pancreatic head removal. Initial results suggest this, but still require further confirmation in the scope of a larger study at multiple institutions in Germany. The patients are randomly divided into a hydrocortisone and a placebo group and monitored during and after the operation. Follow-up is for one year.
