Reactivity of Cyanometalates towards superacids and organic electrophiles

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 499470691

Cyanide complexes are an important research field in inorganic coordination chemistry. Due to the high nucleophilicity of the terminal nitrogen atom they are ideally suited for the coordination of additional metal cations. However, the aim of this project is the coordination of protons and organic electrophiles to the terminal nitrogen. In part A, the reactivity of cyanometalates towards superacids will be studied. Part B focuses on reactions with highly reactive alkylating agents in order to generate new metal isonitrile complexes. Since the chemistry of metal isonitrile complexes is typically dominated by metal centers in low oxidation states, their redox chemistry under strongly oxidizing conditions will also be studied. In summary, this project wants to bring together coordination, organometallic and inorganic fluorine chemistry in order to explore new aspects of cyanometalate chemistry. By using experimental techniques that are only used by a few labs in the world, this will take a new path to unprecedented, highly reactive compounds.
