Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Seit Jahrhunderten werden in den Wissenschaften komplexe Phänomene durch Modelle beschrieben. Simulationen ermöglichen es uns, wichtige Aspekte dieser Systeme zu verstehen, ihre Zustände vorherzusagen und zu entscheiden, wie solche Systeme zu kontrollieren sind. Simulationstechnologie hat sich zu einem unverzichtbaren Bestandteil von Forschung und Entwicklung in vielen unterschiedlichen Gebieten entwickelt und trägt entscheidend zum technologischen Fortschritt in unserer modernen Gesellschaft bei. Seit 2007 hat der Exzellenzcluster EXC 310 „Simulation Technology (SimTech)” an der Universität Stuttgart die Simulation hinsichtlich Modellen, Methoden und Computing-Aspekten aus der Ingenieursperspektive in großer Breite und Tiefe vorangetrieben. Mit seinem interdisziplinären und methodischen Profil hat der EXC 310 die gesamte Universität nachhaltig geprägt und durch über 10 neuen Professuren Modellierung und Simulation als international sichtbaren Forschungsschwerpunkt etabliert. SimTechs langfristiges Ziel war, die Simulationstechnik von isolierten Ansätzen zu einer ganzheitlichen Systemwissenschaft zu entwickeln. Traditionelle Strategien aus verschiedenen Disziplinen und Theorien wurden überwunden und zu einer neuen Klasse einer integrativen Simulationsumgebung verschmolzen, die alle Aspekte vom Modell bis zum interaktiven System unterstützt. Wir trugen zur einem vertieften Verständnis grundlegender Prozesse bei und verbesserten Modellierungsstrategien und numerische Algorithmen, entwickelten Datenmanagement und -analyse weiter und erhöhten die Leistung und Verlässlichkeit zukünftiger Simulationssysteme. Dies war nur über akademische Fachgrenzen hinweg möglich. Der Cluster konzentrierte sich auf sieben Forschungsbereiche, die von Molekulardynamik und moderner Mechanik über Numerische Mathematik und Systemanalyse bis hin zum Datenmanagement, zur interaktiven Visualisierung und zum High-Performance-Computing reichen und von der Integrativen Plattform der Reflektion und der Kontextualisierung umfasst wurden. Projektnetzwerke gruppierten sich um zentrale methodische Herausforderungen und Anwendungsvisionen und trugen zum Wissenstransfer bei. SimTech war auch überaus erfolgreich in Bezug auf Ausbildung, wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs sowie bei Gleichstellung und Diversität. Der konsekutive Studiengang Simulation Technology hat inzwischen über 150 BSc und MSC Abschlüsse vergeben. In der Graduiertenschule wurden 130 Promotionen und 10 Habilitationen abgeschlossen. SimTech war federführend, den Tenure-Track an der Universität Stuttgart einzuführen und es wurden 12 Juniorprofessuren erfolgreich evaluiert. 50 Nachwuchswissenschaftler wurden auf Professuren an der Universität und weltweit berufen. Der Cluster wurde in einer fakultätsähnlichen Struktur als Stuttgarter Zentrum für Simulationswissenschaften nachhaltig institutionalisiert, in dem auch der neue EXC 2075 “Data-Integrierte Simulationswissenschaft” auf den Erfolgen von EXC 310 aufbaut.
