5-laser Flow Cytometer

Subject Area Medicine
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 507583661

In this proposal, we are applying for a 5 laser flow cytometer for the research groups of the Department of Internal Medicine II at Klinikum rechts der Isar, Munich. This flow cytometer will critically enhance the experimental possibilities of the participating research groups. Flow cytometry is a technique, which allows for a rapid, efficient and differentiated analysis of living cell populations and it is a central method in immunological research. To date, the only available flow cytometer at the department is more than 10 years old and allows for the simultaneous analysis of 10 channels. The device proposed here, however, offers the possibility of concurrently analyzing up to 40 different fluorophores. Immune cell populations are increasingly diverse, and a high number of different markers is often required for their functional and phenotypic characterization. At the same time, analyses are often conducted in a restricted amount of primary material, especially when working with patient samples. Therefore, a high-performance flow cytometer is indispensable for the identification of complex immunological interactions, especially in patient material. The research group leaders involved in this proposal have long-standing expertise in flow cytometry and can therefore reassure a proper handling of the proposed device.
