NMR spectroscopy is the most important method for the analysis of molecular structures in the working groups of organic and inorganic chemistry at the Department of Chemistry. The analytical requirements range from structural analysis of CH scaffolds to the identification of heteronuclei to the characterization of intermolecular interactions or relaxation properties. The strongly experimentally oriented education brings students into contact with NMR spectroscopy at an early stage. As researchers, they have access to four 250-300 MHz routine spectrometers, two 500 MHz and one 600 MHz spectrometer at the department. The 600 MHz spectrometer is at the forefront of spectroscopic structure elucidation in Central Analytics NMR spectroscopy. While the 600 MHz spectrometer has the highest resolution of any existing instrument, the aging electronics (no investment has been made in the machine since its installation in 2005) are no longer up to the task of elucidating complex scientific questions. With the renewal of the 600 MHz NMR spectrometer console, new ranges of sensitivity can be opened up and new measurement techniques can be used that could not be used before. Technical developments in the field of hetero-nuclei allow the measurement of completely new correlation spectra. This concerns in particular the 19F correlations, a nucleus that is at the center of the molecular syntheses of several research groups. The technology is based on a transceive principle, i.e. each NMR channel has transmit and receive functions. Thus, each channel is its own independent spectrometer with complete RF generation, transmission and reception infrastructure. This architecture provides maximum flexibility in terms of instrument configuration and multi-channel operation. Multi-receive experiments can also be implemented, allowing simultaneous measurement on multiple frequency channels for more efficient use of measurement time.
