The diffusion behavior of individual molecules in wetting and dewetting structures will be studied by tracking their trajectories using sensitivity fluorescence imaging. This can be achieved by applying fluorescent labels to a very small portion of the molecules in the wetting phase which can be localized in succeeding fluorescence images and thus tracked. By comparing diffusion data from the bulk to those from contact lines of two or three phases a microscopic image of molecular diffusion in different regions of wetting or dewetting structures will be developed. Herby the evolution of prewetting layers and its origin from the viewpoint of molecular diffusion is of special interest. By surface energy variation the influence of this parameter on the diffusion behavior will be analyzed systematically. The experiments are accompanied by simulations of the molecular dynamics concerning the molecular degrees of freedom influence on the surface diffusion. The experimental methods will also be transferred to structured surfaces and multicomponent polymer mixtures.
