Spectrometer console for a 500 MHz FT-NMR spectrometer

Subject Area Molecular Chemistry
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 510824417

NMR spectroscopy has become a valuable and extremely useful analytical tool not only in the field of chemistry. To answer scientific questions about the structure and reactivity of molecules in solution, this method is absolutely essential. The instrument, which is the subject of the present application, is available to all work groups of the faculty. However, within the faculty it is mainly used by the synthetically oriented work groups of organic and inorganic chemistry. The scientific topics and issues addressed here are consequently multifaceted. They range from catalysis – enantioselective utilizing bio catalysts or metal-based catalytically active systems – to the analyses of peptide conformations and peptide-protein interactions, the structural elucidation of ethnomedical agents extracted from plant sources – obtained very often only on a submilligram scale – to the study of weak intra- and intermolecular donor-acceptor interactions in solution as well as complex formation of poly-Lewis acids. Almost all of these research topics require NMR measurements with suitable spectral resolution and sensitivity, which are sometimes very time consuming, to elucidate structures and reaction pathways. The oldinstrument was and still is an essential part of the NMR spectroscopic infrastructure of the faculty. It covers an essential part of the total measurement time and provides suitable spectral resolution and sensitivity due to its field strength. Renewal of the spectrometer electronicssystem is intended to ensure the operational capability for another 10 – 15 years, and also offer the possibility to implement current pulse sequences. The requested electronic-system is to guarantee that all users will have sufficient measurement time over the next 10 – 15 years to perform timely and efficient NMR measurements on their samples, which are produced in high numbers in the synthesis laboratories.
