Optical parametric oscillator (OPO) laser system

Subject Area Physical Chemistry
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 511810734

The new laser system will be used to extend our studies on intermolecular forces and reactions in the ultracold environment of helium nanodroplets. With the new laser system, we extend our frequency range, allowing us to observe the OH-stretching modes, which are sensitive probes for hydrogen bonding. We aim to detect the molecular interaction of highly reactive compounds, such as carbenes or lithium bases, with water and investigate their solvation processes. We want to build a comprehensive picture of the role of the solvent in catalytic processes by studying electron transfer reactions with well-defined number of water molecules. Furthermore, future studies will focus on molecular aggregates with relevance to atmospheric chemistry. The new OPO laser system will be an excellent addition to our helium nanodroplet isolation (HENDI) setup and will allow us to tackle important problems in the study of molecular aggregates.
