HPC-Cluster

Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 512862097

A High-Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster is to be procured as an addition to the Scientific Compute Cluster (SCC) of the GWDG. The extension consists mainly of compute nodes, a parallel file system and a high-speed network for parallel applications and the connection to the file system. As a tier-3 system, the SCC efficiently pools resources for various local user groups. The planned compute nodes are divided into different classes: standard compute nodes for smaller, interactive or massively parallel applications, nodes with a lot (>= 1 TB) of system memory and nodes equipped with multiple GPU accelerators for appropriately programmed applications. In addition, there is the management network, as well as infrastructure components such as racks, cooling equipment and, finally, the vendor's services in the form of delivery, installation and startup operations. After the planned operating period of five years, a new procurement makes economic sense, as the investment costs are offset by the improved efficiency of new hardware.
