During an excavation of the archaeologist Theodor Wiegand about fifty fragments of an archaic marble charioteer frieze came to the surface in 1908 at Myus/Ionia. The fragments could be attributed with marble architectural fragments to the temple on the lower terrace. Further frieze fragments were discovered during campaigns in 1964 and 1966 and were brought to the Aydin Museum. The fragments found in 1908 today are kept in the magazines of the Antikensammlung in Berlin. In 2015/2016 the fragments have been documented in drawings and a catalogue by the author. The colleague H. R. Goette made excellent photos of the pieces in 2016. In 2023 a so far unknown singular frieze fragment was found in the depot of the Miletus excavation. Aim of the publication project is to publish all the fragments of the exceptional charioteer frieze of the lower temple at Myus vividly with professional drawings and photos and a detailed catalogue, to analyze the frieze typologically and iconographically as well as to classify it stylistically and chronologically and to highlight its significance in the archaic Ionic architectural sculpture and architecture. Furthermore, the original architectural context of the frieze will be cleared up and solid well-founded new reconstructions of the Myus-frieze will be presented.
