Hybrid structures consisting of semiconducting polymers and strongly luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals offer favourable perspectives in display technology through a combination of low cost wet-chemical processability with a highly saturated emission colour, which is of importance to the development of full colour large area flat panel displays. Further fields of possible applications are hybrid organic-inorganic light-emitting diodes and solar cells. This project addresses the development of smart combinations of semiconducting polymers that are directly attached to semiconductor nanocrystals through a proper choice of functional groups of the polymers, paving the way to novel composite functional materials. Investigation and optimisation of energy transfer, charge generation and transport in these materials will be carried out, being of beneficial impact towards improved efficiency of hybrid polymer/nanocrystal devices.
