Biomolecular condensates as sensors of nucleic acids (A26*)

Subject Area Biochemistry
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 369799452

In this research project, we aim to understand the role of immunocondensates in detecting nucleic acids and mounting adaptive responses to foreign nucleic acids. We will focus on G3BP as a key co-factor regulating the condensation and activation of the nucleic acid sensors PKR, RIG-I and cGAS. We will use biochemistry, biophysics, and cell biology to reconstitute G3BP immunocondensatesand dissect mechanisms of immunocondensate assembly and function. Our studies will establish immunocondensates as a novel wayto sense foreign nucleic acids and mount efficient and specific immune responses against viral infections. We also expect important insights into autoimmune diseases and cancer.
