Dialect acquisition in different sociolinguistic contexts: Limits of variability in Alemannic and Pomerano (D04 {ehem. C10})

Subject Area Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 317633480

Project D04 investigates the acquisition of two German dialects (Alemannic in Southwest Germany and Pomerano in Brazil). Using longitudinal data of spontaneous family interaction, it focuses on the development of phonological and phonetic variability in children aged 1;6 to 5;2. Project Part I quantitatively analyzes dialect-standard variability in bilectal Alemannic–Standard German families. Parts II and III focus on dialect-internal variability in Alemannic and Pomerano. Unlike Alemannic, Pomerano is not "roofed" by Standard German. This allows for a contrastive analysis of how different language contact situations shape variability and its acquisition.
